On 3rd October, 1915, the 11th Royal Fusiliers battalion of 54 Brigade, 18th Division moved into the front line near Fricourt on the Somme where they remained until relieved on 11th October. There was a lot of mining activity by both sides in this area of the Western Front, where the chalky soil lent itself to this form of warfare and during this week spent in the trenches a number of these mines were blown resulting in six men being killed and another five wounded. One of those killed was Cyril Selmes who lost his life on 8th October. |
